Re:  COVID-19 Update for the Edinburgh Community Schools

I just wanted to give you a quick update as to where our school corporation stands regarding cases of COVID-19 or Coronavirus.  Since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, the Edinburgh Community Schools have had six confirmed diagnoses of students with coronavirus.  Our first confirmed diagnosis was on August 4, 2020 and our most recent case was on November 9, 2020. We have had elementary, middle and high school students diagnosed with COVID-19.

When our Corporation Nurse, Mrs. Allison Small, learns of the diagnosis, she begins “contact tracing” to determine the number of students and staff members who were within six feet of the diagnosed student for fifteen minutes or more within a twenty-hour period of time.  Those students and staff members who meet this definition are quarantined for fourteen calendar days. They can return to school or work following quarantine if they do not exhibit any of the following symptoms of illness:

  • Temperature above 100 degrees F (within the past 72 hours without medication)
  • Fever or chills
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Abdominal pain or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

The Edinburgh Community Schools are following the direction established by the Indiana Department of Health which has been supported by communication with the Johnson County Board of Health. As you know, Edinburgh Middle/High School is following a “Hybrid” calendar through November 24, 2020 due to the Indiana Department of Health’s designation of Johnson County as “Orange” due to “moderate to high community spread” of the coronavirus or COVID-19.   East Side Elementary School was not “strongly encouraged” to use a hybrid schedule, but teachers and students are encouraged to continue wearing face masks, practice social distancing and wash their hands regularly.

We will continue to monitor the Indiana Department of Health’s website and if conditions in Johnson County move our designation to “Red” we will evaluate the appropriate steps to protect the health of every student and staff member of the Edinburgh Community Schools. If necessary, our students and staff members are prepared to return to eLearning.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue, please either call (812) 526-2681 or e-mail (darnold@ecsc.k12.in.us) myself.
